I am a freelance writer, critic, curator, & film historian. I contribute regularly to publications including the Guardian & Sight & Sound, as well as editing silent cinema website Silent London. I am a member of Fipresci, the London Film Critics’ Circle & the Society of Authors. I have been working full-time as a journalist since 2001. After 12 years on staff at the Guardian, I went freelance in summer 2016.
My publications include two monographs as part of the BFI Film Classics series: one on The Red Shoes, published in 2023, another on Pandora’s Box, published in November 2017. I also edited 30-Second Cinema, published in March 2019.
I am a regular guest on BBC Radio 4’s arts programmes, & Radio 3’s Free Thinking.
